Mental Health in Clinical Practice

The Gap, the Physiology, and the Path Forward

A free preview of the Mental Health Summit

Depression and anxiety affect a significant share of patients in every practice setting, yet most do not reach remission on first-line treatment. This opening session looks at where conventional care stalls, and at the physiologic contributors that symptom-only diagnosis misses.

Learning objectives

What you’ll be able to do

Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to:

Describe current prevalence, treatment-response, and remission data for depression and anxiety disorders

Identify physiologic contributors to mood, anxiety, and attention symptoms that symptom-only diagnosis may miss — including inflammatory, metabolic, nutrient, hormonal, microbiome, circadian, and medication-related factors

Outline a sequenced integrative clinical approach that moves from medication review and laboratory assessment to targeted intervention and safe medication management

Recognize red flags requiring urgent psychiatric evaluation and define referral thresholds for non-psychiatric clinicians

About this session

What we’ll cover

We open with the data: current prevalence of depression and anxiety, how many patients respond to first-line treatment, how many actually reach remission, and the specific points where conventional care stalls.

From there we map the physiologic contributors that a symptom-only diagnosis will not surface: inflammatory, immune, and gut-brain mechanisms; medications that cause psychiatric presentations; metabolic, nutrient, hormonal, and microbiome findings; pharmacogenomics; SAMe and methylated B vitamins; circadian rhythm; safe psychotropic deprescribing; and ADHD across the lifespan. Each one previews a later session in the summit.

We will end with red flags that mean a presentation needs urgent psychiatric evaluation, and clear referral thresholds for clinicians who are not psychiatrists.
